Aetiological Role of Toxic Oils in Epidemic Dropsy a Review

چکیده
For the pastseventy years a number of theories have been put forward to explain the causation of eidemic dropsy. Notable amongst these are that it is due to an 'infection' or an ' intoxication ' acquired from diseased rice or adulterated mustard oil, the latter being commonly used in this part of the country as a cooking fat and also for external application. Sagayam (1927) (Cf. also Sarkar, 1915; Chakravarty, 1923-24) reported an outbreak of epidemic dropsy amongst the Indians of Fiji and not amongst the Fijians and Chinese of the island. Rice used by all of them was obtained from the

Changing Pattern of Epidemic Dropsy in North India
Background:Epidemic dropsy occurs due to ingestion of mustard oil contaminated with oil from Argemone mexicana, leading to edema and tenderness of the abdomen, upper and lower limbs. In this study, clinical profiles of patients presented with epidemic dropsy in north India are described. Methods: This was a prospective study of patients presented with epidemic dropsy to the emergency department...
متن کاملEpidemic dropsy in India.
Epidemic dropsy is a clinical state resulting from use of edible oils adulterated with Argemone mexicana oil. Sanguinarine and dehydrosanguinarine are two major toxic alkaloids of Argemone oil, which cause widespread capillary dilatation, proliferation and increased capillary permeability. Leakage of the protein-rich plasma component into the extracellular compartment leads to the formation of ...

Although epidemic dropsy was recognised in 1877 when it appeared as an epidemic outbreak in Calcutta, it came to the attention of ophthalmologists only in 1909, when Maynard' reported the occurrence of glaucoma in cases of the disease. Epidemic dropsy is an acute toxic disease characterised initially by gastrointestinal disturbances, lowgrade fever followed by oedema of the extremities, especia...

areas by La] et al. (1937) and Chopra et al. (1939). There is little to doubt that adulterated mustard oil is primarily responsible for the large outbreaks of epidemic dropsy. More recently S. N. Sarkar (1948) has isolated the toxic alkaloid, sanguinerine, from argemone oil and shown its capillary dilating and other deleterious properties in animals. Bailey, Robinson and Staunton (1950) have la...
